Abstract :
The batch polymerization process is widely used in industry for its availability and flexibility in operations. The main objective in the batch polymerization process is to obtain the desired polymer properties as well as to reduce the batch reaction time. In the design and control of polymerization reactor, it is very important removing the heat of reaction and good ideal mixing. Temperature profiles and thermal conditions in the reactor cause significant changes in polymer quality and polymer conversion. In this study, the dynamic of methylmethacrylate (MMA) polymerization reactor and the performance temperature control by using self-tuning PID control method have been investigated by manipulating the heat flow through the heater in the jacketed batch reactor. This study proceeded in two stages namely theoretical and experimental, carrying the results from first to second. In theoretical work, mass and energy balance equations for this batch polymerization reactor were derived and solved. Genetic algorithm (GA) was used to find model parameters and tuning parameters of self-tuning PID control. By using these parameters polymerization have been carried out at different operation temperature. In this study, a solution polymerization was chosen, and MMA, toluene and benzyl peroxide (BPO) were used as monomer, solvent and initiator, respectively. During the experiments, the samples for conversion and molecular weight measurements were taken from the reactor at certain intervals. As a result, it was seen that self-tuning PID controller with the parameters found with GA resulted in a good performance for maintaining the reactor temperature at the desired set point and PMMA with desired properties was obtained.
