Abstract :
Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the important legume species in Turkey. The objective of the study was to characterize a total of 12 bean genotypes with one being a standard genotype collected from Burdur province in terms of morphological and phenological characteristics. Local bean genotypes collected from farmers during the winter period were inoculated in a bean field in May of 2009. Morphological, phenological and quality characteristics of the genotypes were determined during the vegetation period based on the UPOV criteria. At the end of the study, no significant differences were determined between the genotypes in terms of flowering time, vegetation period and protein ratios. On the other hand, growth type, plant height, flower color, pod length, pod pigmentation, pod stringiness, pod roughness, 1000 grain weight, grain color, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant and average pod weight showed significant differences among genotypes. The results suggest that there are enough variations among genotypes in terms of certain characteristics that provides them the potential to be used in the breeding programs.
