Abstract :
Exhaust heat recovery is possible by using thermoelectric generator. At the same time, it is needed to increase the power output of thermoelectric generators. But the operating temperature is required to regulate the operating temperature since thermoelectric generators are temperature limited. Heat pipe based heat exchangers are used obtain high heat transfer between a hot and a cold source due to their very low resistance. The operating temperature may be controlled by using variable conductance heat pipe which is one of the special kind of heat exchangers. By this way, reliable conditions may be provided for thermoelectric generators. The present study investigates theoretically the merit of the aforementioned approach. A thermal model of a thermoelectric generator with variable conductance het pipe assist is proposed. Theoretical results obtained are presented together with experimental results exist in literatur to validate the model. It was found that indeed the heat pipe heat exchanger enables the thermoelectric generator to operate at a constant, optimal temperature in a passive and safe way and with a minimal overall thermal resistance. Furthermore, the use of variable conductance heat pipes was found to prevent thermal dilution under low loads by effectively reducing the active module area and not by deprecating the temperature level of the whole generator.
