Title Of Article :
Effects of Low-Temperature Osmotic Conditioning Treatments with Methyl Jasmonate and Seaweed Extract (Ascophyllum nodosum) on Germination Percentage, Mean Germination Time and Germination Index of Tomato Seeds
Abstract :
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some pretreatments on low-temperature stress of Rio Grande and H-2274 tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) seeds. Experimental seeds were osmotic-conditioned (OC) with seaweed extracts (1:500) and 0.5 mm mM methyl jasmonate (MeJA) solutions at 20°C for 1, 2 and 3 days. Following the treatments, seeds were subjected to germination tests at 15 and 20°C. OC treatments with MeJA and seaweed increased germination percentage and germination index of Rio Grande cultivar at 15 and 20°C and shortened the mean germination time. OC treatments with MeJA and seaweed increased germination index and mean germination time of H-2274 cultivar at 15 and 20°C, but increases in germination percentage were not significant. The highest germination percentage at 20°C in Rio Grande seeds was obtained from the 3-day MeJA treatments (98%) and the highest value in H- 2274 seeds was obtained from the 1-day seaweed extract treatments (97.5%). Germination percentages of control seeds were observed as 93.0 and 94.5%, respectively. The highest germination percentage at 15°C in Rio Grande seeds was obtained from the 2-day seaweed treatments (97.5%) and the highest value in H- 2274 seeds was obtained from the 3-day seaweed treatments (93.5%). Germination percentages of control seeds at 15°C were observed as 91.0 and 92.5%, respectively. While OC treatments of tomato seeds with seaweed extract and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) at low temperatures (15 and 20°C) had positive impacts on germination percentage, germination index and mean germination time of Rio Grande cultivar, the treatments had positive impacts only on mean germination time and germination index of H-2274 cultivar. The increases in germination ratios of H-2274 seeds were not significant.
