University Prep Schools Debate: The Journalistic Discourse on the Clash between the AK Party Government and the Gülen Movement
Abstract :
AK Party Government prepared a law regarding the prep schools, which are preparing students for the national university exam. According to this law prep schools have to be closed or converted into private schools that will be controlled by the Ministry of Education of Turkey. This issue caused heavy conflicts. These longstanding conflicts on the agenda have brought about political unrest between AK Party and the Gülen Movement, and the topic has been turned from an issue of education into a power struggle between AK Party and the Gülen Movement. The aim of study which concerns about how this process has been addressed on newspaper reports is to discuss reflections of the conflict between AK Party and the Gülen Movement in the background of the agenda of the closure of the prep schools. In this study in which the newspaper reports are analyzed through the Teun Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. The Sabah, Zaman, Taraf, Hürriyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers are examined, and the reports (from November 15 to December 4) regarding the decree of the closure of prep schools are analyzed. Furthermore some photographs on the newspapers regarding this subject are analyzed through Roland Barthes’ conceptualizations of denotation and connotation.
