Title Of Article :
The Effect of Psychiatric Nursing Education on Knowledge Level of Nurses
Abstract :
This research carried out to determine the effect of psychiatric nursing education on knowledge level of nurses who work in a psychiatric hospital. This research has been carried out on nurses working at Manisa Mental and Nervous Diseases Hospital between April 2006 and June 2006. Subjects of this research are nurses working in this hospital, sampling includes 59 of these nurses who volunteered to attend the psychiatric nursing education programme and to complete from 80% of the courses. The research data was collected by Introductory Information Form and Form for Determining the Knowledge Level. Data collection instruments were applied after the required approvals were obtained. While average knowledge score of the nurses pre- psychiatric nursing education was 61.79±15.59, it rose to 77.40±5.97 post-teaching, and this difference in scores was also statistically significant (p 0.001). In conclusion, it was found out that psychiatric nursing education provided for the nurses increased the nurses’ knowledge and awareness. In line with this conclusion, it is suggested that continuous education programs with similar content on psychiatric nursing and its practices are provided especially for the nurses working with psychiatric patients.
