An Important Way for Coping: Usage of Humor
Abstract :
Humor is defined as “any intervention promoting health and well-being by playful discovery, explanation and approvement of absurdity or incongruence of life conditions” and humor can be used as an integrative treatment for physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual wellness and coping. Humor provides individual a way of feeling a ‘distance’ between one’s self and the problem, a way of standing off and by this way, individual gains abilities of objective thinking and behavior developed in the direction of these thoughts. So, individual feels more positive and this positivity makes stress more endurable. Because of these effects, it can be helpful for nurses to promote humor with patients and relatives during their interactions. In this article, the relation between humor and coping is examined, this relation considered helpful at directing nurses for prevention in mental health and some suggestions are made for nurses to develop their sense of humor.
