Abstract :
The current study was conducted to measure the validity and reliability of the Multidimensional Diabetes Questionnaire for use with a Turkish population and evaluate the psychometric properties. The study used a methodological design. The data was collected by self-report between March 2006 and October 2007. The sample of the study is composed of 350 people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus from three outpatient clinics in Istanbul, Turkey. Translation and back-translation of the orginal English instrument and content validation through a expert panel were the first two steps of the study. Third step was the psychometric testing of the adapted instrument by establishing internal consistency (Chronbach’s alpha and total item correlation), stability (test-re test) content validity (content validity index) and construct validity (factor analysis). According to explanatory factor analysis a six-factor solution was found to be reasonable with the sub dimensions social support (11 items), interference (9 items), outcome expectancies (6 items), self efficacy (7 items), severity (3 items) and misguided support behaviors (4 items). Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed this six-factor solution (2/df: 3,80; SRMR: 0.07). Chronbach’s alpha cofficient values ranged from 0.58 to 0.91 in the six subscales. Total item correlation range 0.58-0.87 and test-retest reliability range 0.87-0.97. The Turkish version of the Multidimensional Diabetes Questionnaire seems to be reliable and valid outcome for measuring diabetes-related cognitive and social factors in type 2 diabetes patients. However, there is need more studies to explain the invariability of the Turkish version of the Multidimensional Diabetes Questionnaire.
