Should Human Milk Banks Exist in Turkey?
Abstract :
Infants who are not breastfed for various reasons have the right to access safe and healthy foods. It is thought that the existence of a milk bank unit that is near a neonatal intensive care unit has paramount importance. It is also thought that such an important service will also allow infants to benefit from the milk of their own mothers. Moreover, mothers who do not feed their infants on their own milk for various reasons would express their milk as a donor. They also would meet the need of human milk of the other infants who are not breastfed. It is thought that a session on milk banks at maternity hospitals will contribute to share mothers’ views on both of milk banking and donor milk. Human milk banking is an important preventive health intervention. In this review, it was examined the human milk needs of both premature and low birth weighted infants. It was also examined the necessity for human milk banking.
