Abstract :

This descriptive study is aimed to determine the ideas of the nursing students about psychiatric nursing lesson and roles of psychiatric nurse. This study was conducted to the fourth class students in the School of Nursing in the 2005-2006 Academic Year Autumn and Spring Term and 2006-2007 Academic Year Autumn Term (N=213). The sample consisted of students who had completed Psychiatric Nursing training during the research period (n=157). Students, who didn’t accept to attend study, didn’t implicate the study (n=21). Data were collected by using Questionnaire Form that was developed by researchers. Frequency analysis was applied to analyse the data. It was determined that the students are very pleased with theoretical and clinical training of Psychiatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing lesson changed the attitudes of students positively to mentally ill person and mental illness, roles of psychiatric nurse were comprehended sufficiently at the end of training but the students didn’t observe the roles of the model enough, the most of the students didn’t want to work in psychiatric clinics because of their prejudice against mentally ill person and mental illness and their observation in psychiatric nursing lesson clinical practice area. As a result of this study, it was determined that the students comprehended the roles of the psychiatric nurse sufficiently at the end of the Psychiatric Nursing training period.
