Abstract
In this study, we aimed to determine empathy and self compassion levels and the relation between empathy levels and self compassion of nursing students. This descriptive study was carried out between 9 to 18 December 2009. The study groups was composed of 185 nursing students in Çukurova University Health School of Adana. Data were collected by Individual Information Form, Empathic Skills Test Form-B, Self-Compassion Scale. Data were assessed using percentage, arithmetical average, and Standard deviation, Kruskal Wallish, Man Whitney U test and correlation. It was determined that Empathic Skills scores of students were 150.55± 26.81 and Self-Compassion scores were 73.67±9.65. There was negatively significantly correlated between Empathic Skills and Self-Compassion scale scores (r =- 0264, p 0.01). In accordance with the results it is recommended that contents of lectures should be planned to allow improving students’ empathic skills and self-compassion.
