Abstract :
Aim: The purpose of the study is to evaluate gypsies cultural characteristics according to Purnell Cultural Competence Model. Method: The study involved 1241 gypsies aged over 15 who dominantly live in Fevzi Paşa district. The sampling in this qualitative study was identified through snowball and maximum diversity methods. The study group consisted of 30 gypsies aged between 15 and 70, who have different demographic features. An official permission for data collection was taken from Ethic Council of Health Management and Research and Practice Hospital as well as a written agreement from the gypsies. The data were collected through semi-structured interview form constructed according to Purnell Cultural Competence Model. The interviews were carried out by the researchers in focused groups between February and March 2009. The data were collected through recording or note-taking and evaluated through descriptive methods of analysis. Results: The interviews with the gypsies revealed that there commonly exist early marriages, adolescent pregnancies, domestic violence, poverty and unemployment. In addition, the interviewees indicated that they also experienced such problems as malnutrition, adverse environmental conditions, destitute of official health care services, social exclusion, and being stigmatized by others. Conclusion:. The interviews indicated that they experienced being stigmatized by others. Therefore, inter-institutional projects should be conducted in relation to the solutions to the problems identified above.
