Abstract :

Objective: Preoperative education, being practiced before surgical intervention, makes a significant contribution for a patient to take information about what is going to happen in each stage of surgical intervention, to feel better physically and psychologically and for operation results to be positive. This research is a descriptive kind of study that took place between 20.01.2011-20.03.2011 for the purpose of examining the application cases of preoperative education of patients by nurses working in surgical clinicals. Method: The examples of the research includes 65 nurses working in surgical clinicals of two hospitals of a city. In collecting of the data, a questionnaire form that was composed by making literature review by researchers was used and the data were evaluated by SPSS 10.0 program. Results: According to results of the research, it has been detected that 55.4% of the nurses are graduates of associate degree and the average of civil cervice year of them is 10.0±6.29; 78.5% of the nurses practice education of patients in preoperative period; 61.9% of them practice education of patients a day before operation; 31.8% of them use the methods of expression, giving written material and standard forms of foundation together. Conclusion: Surgical clinical nurses apply preoperative education of patients mostly in applications, but; there is some deficiency in practicing the education.
