Abstract :
Objective: This study was carried out to determine the care dependency levels of patients staying in the internal medicine and surgery clinics and to examine the factors affecting these levels. Method: Sample of the research consisted of 579 patients who were staying in the internal medicine and surgery clinics of a research and training hospital and accepted to take part in the research. In collecting the research data, “Patient Identification Form” containing the sociodemographic characteristics of patients and the “Care Dependency Scale” were used. Data were collected by the researchers in face-to-face interviews. Number-percentage distributions, mean and t-Test were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results: Age average of patients is 53.34±3.35 and 52.5% of the patients were male. The difference between the age groups of patients and their total scores in the Care Dependency Scale was found statistically significant (F=12.04, p=.000). The average total score of patients in the care dependency scale was found as 71.51±20.38 while the average total scores of patients staying in the surgery clinics and internal medicine clinics were found to be 73.79±18.11 and 68.45±22.77, respectively. A statistically significant difference was not detected between the dependency status of patients staying in the surgery clinics and internal medicine clinics (p=.002). Conclusion: Although the average total scores of patients in the care dependency scale were generally found high, it was determined that care requirements of patients staying in the internal medicine clinics were higher and there was a statistically significant difference between clinics in terms of dependency levels of patients.
