Nursing Students’ Drug Dose Calculation Skills And Drug Administration Errors
Abstract :
Objective: The study was conducted to analyze nursing students’ drug dose calculation skills and drug administration errors. Method: The population of this study with a descriptive nature consists of 237 students in total studying at the first, second, third and fourth grades in Department of Nursing at Vocational Health High School of Düzce University. The sample consists of 158 students who were studying and agreed to participate in the study at the time of research conduct. As for data collection tools, a data collection form prepared by researchers was used. In order to evaluate data, number and percentage distributions were used. Results: It was found out in students’ statements regarding drug dose calculation skills that the percentage of students who reported to know how to calculate drug dose was 45.2 % and that of those who considered their drug dose calculating skills sufficient was 38.9 %. The percentage of those who calculated drug dose flawlessly was 16.7 %. Students were found to have made at least one mistake in drug dose and the most frequent one was about oral drug administration. Conclusion: In terms of patient safety, it is found to be significant that the students did not make any other administration errors other than frequency of administration errors and drug proportion.
