Abstract :

Purpose: This study was planned methodologically to develop a scale suitable to Turkish population that will measure the health literacy in adults and to study its psychometric characteristics. Method: Individuals between the ages 18-65 who visited the family health center during the days of the study constituted the population of the research. All individuals in the population are aimed to be reached without sample selection. Results: Totally 381 people, between the ages of 18-65 years participated to the study. 303 of the participants are women (79.5%), and 78 of them are male (20.5%).The scale was reviewed by 7 experts for the content validity and then pilot study was performed in a group of 30 people. As a result of reliability and validity analysis, cronbach alpha coefficient of adult health literacy scale is found as .77 and test-retest reliability coefficient is found as .87. The content validity index of the scale that consists of 23 items is 90.71%. After factor analysis an eight-factor structure that explains 60.68% of the total variance is found. Conclusion: The results of this study determined that the “Adult Health Literacy Scale” is valid and reliable and can be used in adult group.
