Abstract :
Objective: Using an experimental research design, whether individual training using Ausubel’s expository teaching strategy affected caregiving competence and knowledge was evaluated in this study, while providing care for their dependent elderly. Method: The control group included 50 caregivers; the experimental group included 52 caregivers. They provided care for elderly family members who were 65-years-old and over, dependent in at least five areas and referred to Konya Home Care Health Services unit between January and April 2012. The experimental group received 20-h individual training at-home using Ausubel’s expository teaching strategy regarding home health care and elderly care within the scope of education modules for family caregivers”. The data was evaluated using ‘family caregiving factors inventory’ and ‘elderly care knowledge level test’. Results: Compared with that of the control group, the experimental group showed greater improvement regarding ‘elderly care knowledge’, ‘caregiving knowledge level’ ‘self-expectations’ and caregiving competency (p 0.001). Although the number of problems decreased in both groups, the control group differed significantly (p 0.05). Conclusion: Individual training given to the family caregivers of the dependent elderly through expository teaching effectively increased their caregiving knowledge and competency.
