  • Abstract
Objective:This study was designed in order to assess self-efficacy levels of patients with type 2 diabetes and the factors affecting self-efficacy. Method: The descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with 230 individuals with type 2 diabetes who were suitable for the inclusion criterias. Data were collected using patient information form which includes sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and Self-Efficacy Scale for evaluating diabetes-related self-efficacy levels of patients. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.90. Data were analysed by using percent, mean, student t test, one-way ANOVA test and Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the relations between variables. p 0.05 value was considered as statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the group was 59.28±8.66. It was determined that %65.2 of the study group was female, %87.8 were married, %58.7 had primary-secondary school graduates and %46.1 of them had bad economic status. Patients who had regular health checks, who stated that they had adequate education about diabetes, who had long diagnosis period, who had higher health perception score for last one year and who had higher health perception score than their peers had also higher diabetes self-efficacy levels. Conclusions: Characteristics like continuing regular health checks, having adequate knowledge about diabetes, perceiving health status according to peers, affect self-efficacy levels of individuals with diabetes. Nurses should take into consideration that patients’ both personal and diabetes-related characteristics could affect self-efficacy levels during care process.
