Title Of Article :
Futile Care in Newborn
Abstract :
Care is not a concept specific to a certain profession, but it is specific to professions of nursing and midwifery, which deal with human beings basically, and is an occupational professional group based on the care, among the health professionals. Occurrence of the concept of uselessness / futility included in the care is based on Plato and Hippocrates. In general, it is possible to define the futile care as “the medical care including care and interventions applied to the patient for maintaining the life having no benefit to the patient”. About 1/3 of the neonatal doctors and nurses in Turkey stated that they used the concept of futile care in daily practices and they reported that this concept mean the treatment being useful for maintaining the irreversible vegetative state or the treatment having no effect to obtain the expected outcome. The number of studies conducted on futile care which is a controversial topic with ethical and legal aspects is limited in Turkey. For this reason, the purpose of this review was to emphasize the importance of this subject.
