Abstract :
Humor as a universal phenomenon is ca-pable of being able to reach the broad masses with regard to entertaining by making one laugh. When we add its instructional side to this attribute, humor’s area of usage broadens significantly. Literature is one of these areas of usage and many literary genres utilized humor. On the other hand, culture as a branch of art was transferred from generation to generation thanks to literature reflecting the society from which it emanated. The Book of Dede Korkut, which is a cultural product, is one of the rare works endured to present day via oral and written literature and it is signifi-cant in terms of reflecting the socio-cultural structure of the Oghuz Turks in IX-XI. centu-ries. Humor, which is a part of this socio-cultural structure, was used in The Book of Dede Korkut when necessary. In our study, we examined humorous elements in The Book of Dede Korkut starting off from the current theories of humor and tried to scrutinize the Oghuz Turks’ understanding of national humor.
