The Relationship between Power and Science in the Ottoman State in XVII Century
Abstract :
This study deals with the relation between power and science in the 17th Century Ottoman Empire. The 17th Century Ottoman World has the characteristics of a pivotal period for conventional and modernization processes to be understood and interpreted. This period involves the first flames which burst out with conflicts in Ottoman thought and disruptions in political regime. These conflicts and disruptions are the first signs which show the malfunction of traditional phenomenon that is shaped in the past and reaches its significance at the present time. Moreover, distinctive feature of the 17th Century in Ottoman Empire lurks in its being the breaking point for traditional construction in both political regime and thought. Another remarkable point for secrecy in terms of power and science relation is that rigid ideology of state order is weakened by political and military reasons at first and then science and thinking undergo a structural change related to this weakness. Therefore, power and science relation in the 17thCentury Ottoman Empire should be evaluated as an avant-garde to the next ages. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate political, military, scientific, and intellectual areas which change in historical process by considering thestructure in the world politics; and to scrutinize science and thought activities within the context of political, judiciary, economic and cultural structure.
