PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR SOLUTIONS OF THE REGION OF SYRIAN-LEBANON ACCORDING TO HUSEYIN RIZA PASHA’S REPORT, DATED 1888

Syrian seaports came to the fore in trade since the Mediterranean trade rose in importance again from 19th century on. Many European countries particularly France and England which realized commercial and strategic significance of the region began playing active roles to wield influence on the region then. The most crucial place of the region is Mount Lebanese because of its central point in Syrian trade and its multi-ethnic and multi-religious structure. Therefore Mount Lebanese became an important place in the eyes of European states. The report which was submitted to Abdulhamit II by Huseyin Riza Pasha who was sent to Syria as a special envoy gives information about the circumstances of Syria-Lebanon and activities of the European states. Furthermore the report states the precautions which should be taken against all those activities. In our study, we will evaluate the suggestions of the Huseyin Riza Pasha and the status of Syrian-Lebanon in the period of Abdulhamid II based on the mentioned report.
