EDGAR ALLAN POE’S “SINGLE EFFECT” THEORY AND CLASSICAL TURKISH STORY: NEV-Î-ZÂDE ÂTÂYÎ EXAMPLE
Abstract :
Considered of the father of the modern short story in the West Literature, Edgar Allan Poe s “single effect theory” is seen as the first theoretical approach to the type of short stories. According to Poe, story must be constructed so as to create a single effect in the reader s mind. In the text of the story on the people, events and places should serve to create the single effect. This single effect, should be deeply of the reader and keeps to under influence a long time. According to Poe, to ensure single effect the length of story is also important. According to him, such a story should be short enough to finish in a single sitting. Nearly 200 years after the death of Atâyî, revealed many features of Poe s “single effect” theory are shown in a remarkable way in some stories of Atâyî. In this study, after giving basic informations about Poe s “single effect” theory in story, Atâyî’s four stories that feature are assayed. In addition, miniatures of these stories have been shown to consolidate “single effect”.
