Abstract :
Hyaluronic acid injection in knee osteoarthritis is very successful because of its simplicity of use and its good tolerance. Viscosupplementation has significant efficacy compared to placebo, on pain and function with a better risk-benefit ratio. It could delay the time of the prosthesis. Clinical efficacy is delayed to 1–4 weeks compared with corticosteroids injections, but it lasts more than 6–12 months. Systematic co-injection with corticosteroid and HA is not justified. Viscosupplementation is a treatment for moderate osteoarthritis, and not for flares with joint swelling. The best profile of response is not yet determined. The ideal indication seems to be moderate internal femoro-tibial knee osteoarthritis without swelling.
