Abstract :
This article aims to reveal the sociological structure of music education by examining the effects of socioeconomic status of students studying in music education institutions, on their preference for music education, expectations, practices, attitudes and thoughts. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the relationship between the effects of social differences and inequalities on music education and differences in perceptions of music teacher candidates considering their ideas, perspectives, interpretations and experiences. In light of the data collected, it is understood that variables concerning the social and economic status like sex, age, place of birth, income level and education, ethnic status and occupation of families have significant effects on choices, expectations, practices, attitudes and ideas about music education. The data implies that more diversified music genres need to be used in education; free public courses could be supported to subsidize amateur music education and help prepare candidates for special talent exams; physical conditions of colleges and dormitories could be improved; and financial support could be provided. Finally, songs and marches that have been used in music education need to be revised in order to create a more liberterian space in music education.
