Title Of Article :
Identification and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Microorganisms Isolated from External Ear Canal of Healthy Dogs
Abstract :
The study was conducted to determine the microbiological examination and antibiotics susceptibility of the external ear canal of healthy 141 dogs. The most frequently isolated microorganism from dog ears was Staphylococcus aureus (31.5%), followed by Streptococcus spp. (16.4%), Bacillus spp.(12.3%), Staphylococcus intermedius (9.5%), Proteus spp. (8.2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8.2%), Escherichia coli (6.8%), Candida spp. (4.2%) and Aspergillus spp. (3.5%), respectively. A statistical analysis of the results suggest that isolation of these microorganisms is significant (p 0.05) in ear canal of healthy dogs. Furthermore, the antimicrobial susceptibility tests of isolated strains were analysed. Majority of the Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus intermedius strains were highly susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic asid, ceftiofur and gentamicin. The study indicates that gentamisin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and antifungal agents continue to be useful in the therapy of otitis externa.
