Abstract :
This study was conducted to detect Listeria monocytogenes in raw milk samples sold at retail in Kayseri. Total of 50 raw milk samples collected from May to September 2009 were examined as recommended by L. monocytogenes isolation protocole of ISO 11290-1/A1-2004. Obtained isolates were biochemically identified at spp. level by Microbact test kit. The results yielded that, 11(22%) of raw milk samples were found contaminated with Listeria spp. Among these, 6 (12%), 3(6%), 1(2%) and 1(2%) of which were found contaminated with only L. monocytogenes, only L. ivanovii, only L. seeligeri and both with L. monocytogenes and L. grayi respectively. Overall, 7(14%) of 50 raw milk samples found to harbour L. monocytogenes. The results of this study indicated that the microbiological risk associated with the presence of L. monocytogenes in raw milk must be evaluated in relation to its final destination. When milk undergoes heat treatment which is then used to produce dairy products, the risk is minimal. But when used without any heat treatment, can be hazardous for public health. Therefore raw milk sold at retail in Kayseri must not be ignored as potential public health risk for the microorganism of concern.
