Abstract :
Aim. The aim of this study is to evaluate, prospectively, the consultations requested from Chest Diseases Clinic and its workload. Method. Bedside pulmonary consultations in Cumhuriyet University Hospital between October and December 2007 were evaluated prospectively. For every patient consulted to the Department of Chest Diseases, the recorded data included the clinic which was investigating and admitting the patient; the reason for requesting consultation; patient history, physical examination, and radiological and clinical findings as assessed by consultant physician; and established diagnosis and recommended interventions. Result. Majority of the consultations (61%) were requested by surgical departments. The most frequent reason for consultation (n=108) was the presence of respiratory symptoms, particularly dyspnea and cough. Sixty one patients (47%) were evaluated preoperatively. The most common ordered tests in consultations were Lung function test (66%), thoracic computed tomography (41%), and arterial blood gas analysis (29%). The most frequently consulted patients were those with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (36%). The most common recommended intervention in result of consultations was medical treatment (34%). Conclusion. We determined that the Chest Diseases Clinic had major contributions in establishing diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and pleural diseases in patients admitted to both medical and surgical clinics, and in preoperative evaluation of their patients.
