Abstract :
Aim. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) of demyelinizated post infectious central nervous system diseases in childhood was intended to investigate diagnosis, clinical course, treatment and the results. Method. History, clinical features, laboratory and radiological findings of six patients with the diagnosis of ADEM were reviewed in 2008-2009 in the range of one-year follow-up time period in Pediatric Neurology Department of Cumhuriyet University. Results. The cases were two girls and four boys. One of the patients had a history of Varicella infection and the upper respiratory tract infection in five patients. The most common symptoms were imbalance, walking disorders and vomiting during application. One of the patients had hemyparesia, aphasia and facial paralysis. In another patient, multiphazic disseminated encephalomyelitis (MDEM) was considered during follow-up. The cranial magnetic resonance images (MRI) of five of the cases have showed ADEM lesions. The first cranial MRI of a patient was interpreted as glioma of pons. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has been performed for all cases. Conclusion. It should be kept in mind that the early diagnosis and appropriate treatment for ADEM could prevent to serious neurological sequelae and the differential diagnosis from other demyelinizated diseases is important.
