Abstract :
Aim. The purpose of this study was to investigate awareness of medical staffs on ticks and tick-borne diseases in Izmir region. Due to the fact that ticks and tick-borne diseases have been increased in Turkey, awareness of medical staffs on this issue gained importance in terms of both their and their patient’s health. Method. In this study, a total of 104 health care providers (the 40 physicians and 64 other medical staffs) working in different departments in Dr. Behçet Uz Children’s Disease and Surgery Education and Research Hospital and Dokuz Eylul University Hospital, have participated in the survey. Results. Of all, 11 physicians (28.2%), 7 other medical staffs (11.3%) had previously removed tick, and 27 physicians (67.7%) and 30 other medical staffs (46.7%) indicated that the equipment in where the ticks have been removed was sufficient. Among the participants, only 13 physicians (32%) and 14 other medical staffs (21.9%) reported that they have been trained on the subject. Of the respondents, 30 physicians (76.3%) and 53 other medical staffs (82.8%) stated that they wanted to be trained on this important health problem. Conclusion. According to the results of our survey, it has been appeared that the health care providers in Turkey are needed to be trained on ticks and tick-borne diseases.
