Rate of intimate partner violence against women and attitudes of women towards violence in Edirne Turkey

Aim. The aim of this is to determine rate of husband violence against adult women, effects of various social factors and attitudes of women towards violence in Edirne, Turkey. Method. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 306 women determined with stratified sampling were applied a questionnaire consisting of items about sociodemographic features and 38 itemed questionnaire including definition of violence, exposure to husband violence, attitudes and behaviors after violence. Results. Husband violence rate was 61.4%. Types of violence were physical in 30.4%, psychological in 54.6%, economical in 19.3%, emotional in 9.8% and sexual in 6.3%. Husband violence rate is higher in women who have low educational state, low age of marriage, married involuntarily, and whose husbands have low educational status, high usage of alcohol and cigarettes, family history of violence against women. Conclusion. Husband violence against women living in Edirne was intense. Awareness of violence types is higher than national averages.Keywords: Women, partner, violence, social support, marital status
