Abstract :
The data gathered for this study was obtained from one to one interview with 400households in Kucuk Cekmece district of Istanbul. Sample size of the study was determined with Unclustered Probability Sampling Method. Per capita consumption of red meat was 6,59 kg, poultry meat consumption was 13,79 kg and fish meat consumption was 4,50 kg in 2010 study area. Consumers participated in the survey have been 59,75% women and 40,25% men. 13,75% of the households had one or two individuals, 66.50% of the households had three or four individuals and 19,75% had five or more individuals. Households consisted of 3,65 individuals on the average. In consuming meat, households cared more about price, nutrient content, hygiene and taste with 29%, 28%, 24% and 19%, respectively. These criteria were taken into account, beef, fish meat, poultry meat and mutton preferences were appropriate for 30%, 27%, 25% and 18% of households, respectively. Based on these results, beef was the most appropriate meat type for consumers. In conclusion it was determined that the mass the mass media should be used to give information to consumers about animal food sources. It was also determined that the hygiene conditions for poultry and fish meat should be improved.
