Abstract
Agriculture is among the most strategic sectors in today s world. Reduction in arable land, loss of usability of available water resources from a variety of reasons have become a serious problem along with an ever increasing population. In the future, sustain-able, well-balanced, safe and adequate food production will be a critical issue that is neces-sary to investigate in order to create environmentally friendly living conditions. A strategic priority for sustainable organic agriculture is to develop sustainable business operations in Turkey, through increasing the certified organic agricultural production. Organic farming also supports the conservation of natural resources and sustainable agriculture. Organic farming systems increase the agricultural productivity and soil fertility while protecting the natural resources and improving the food quality and safety. If certified organic agriculture systems are developed, agricultural income and employment capacity will increase rapidly in the rural areas of Turkey. The GAP region covering a large scale agricultural land em-bodies a great potential for organic agriculture that produce raw materials for different business lines. In this review, the potential of the GAP region for organic agriculture, em-ployment opportunities and the contribution of the labor force to the region have been eval-uated.
