AN ALTERNATIVE OILSEED CROP : CRAMBE (Crambe abyssinica Hochst. ex R.E. Fries)
Abstract :
Crambe [Crambe abyssinica (2n = 6x = 90)] is a member of the Brassicaceae family and is an annual oilseed plant of which seeds can be consumed. Crambe is not a well known species in Turkey although it is present in the country’s flora. Crambe is a new and promising oilseed crop for the industry because it contains 35-50 % oil in its seeds with an erucic acid content of 57 %. Crambe has a potential use in different areas of the industry such as biodiesel, oil industry and machine oil. In addition to that, seed cake after oil extraction can be used as an important feed for livestock .The industrial improvements and a wide range of people needs in developed countries led researchers seeking alternative products. So, high erucic acid content in its seeds makes Crambe as a preferable alternative agro-industrial material.
