Determination of the expansion of urban sprawl to agricultural land through the use of satellite images; Samsun sample

Although there is an urbanization culture which goes back to ancient ages, modern urbanization has developed in 20th and 21st centuries in the world. Cities, which were generally built on nonarable areas at first, expanded as a result of factors such as the development of industry and began to occupy the fertile land around. As a result of this, the use of agricultural land, on which easier and cheaper urbanization can be built, for the purposes of urbanization has become widespread. This study examined the expansion of urban sprawl to agricultural land in the city of Samsun by making use of satellite images, determined the urban area of Samsun with the help of Landsat Satellite images which were taken every five years and the agricultural area that increased and decreased as for years was calculated approximately. According to the results of the study, urban residential area in Samsun increased with a rate of 96.32% and expanded approximately 3.198,9 hectare between the years 1998 and 2014 and this expansion was towards agricultural areas in general. At the end of the study, a land use plan based on land capability categories was planned to prevent the occupation of rural areas by urban sprawl and precautions that should be taken were discussed.
