Irrigation water use characteristics of farmers and their interaction with irrigation union in Bafra district of Samsun province, Turkey

The purposes of the study were to investigate the characteristics of supplier, Altinkaya Irrigation Union, and users of irrigation water, which were the main actors of irrigation supply system, and to explore the interaction between farmers and the union in Bafra irrigation area of Samsun province. Research data were collected from Altinkaya Irrigation Union and randomly selected 128 farms by using wellstructured questionnaire. During the stage of socio-economic and water use characteristics analysis, classical economic analysis approach and descriptive statistics were used, respectively. Research results showed that during the irrigation project preparation and management studies of Altinkaya Irrigation Union, there had been no any activities done for enhancing the farmer s knowledge and skills on irrigation water use and adapting modern irrigation methods. Owners of the farms in the research area think that the union has insufficient repair and maintenance service and water transportation. Farmer education programme may decrease the overuse of irrigation water and problems of salinity and high level of groundwater. By means of coordinative study with a collaboration of different institutions, training programmes in irrigation methods can be organized, and farmers and employees of the irrigation union can be encouraged to join these programmes.
