  • Abstract
In this study, chitosan material as an alternative adsorbent to the commonly used materials with high removal efficiency were used for the removal of dye from wastewater. In the adsorption of Acid Blue 29(AB 29) dye onto chitosan, the adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent concentration, initial dye concentration and temperature were investigated and the optimum conditions for the adsorption process were determined. From the experimental results, it was observed that adsorption reached to the equilibrium in 15-20 minutes . The highest removal yield in the equilibrium process was obtained at pH=4 , X=1.0 g/L (adsorbent concentration) values and T=35 °C .When the fitting of the adsorption data to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were investigated, the best fitting was observed to Langmuir model with the highest regression coefficients. For the analysis of adsorption kinetics of AB 29 dye onto chitosan, pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models were applied to the experimental data. Because of the all correlation coefficients were greater than 0.99 and the experimental and theoretical values very close to each other, the pseudo second-order kinetic model was determined as the best kinetic model. When the system was thermodynamically analyzed, the negative ΔGo values obtained for the adsorption process showed that there was no an energy barrier for this system. As a result of this study on dye removal, adsorbent chitosan can be considered as an alternative material to the other adsorbents.
