PRODUCTION OF BLUE CO-ALUMINATE PIGMENTS FOR INK JET INKS
Abstract :
In ceramic industry, ink-jet decoration has been became a widespread technique in recent years because of providing high quality decoration and allowing to use standard color inks. The inks used in inkjet printing are prepared by using submicron-sized pigments ( 500 nm). In this study, synthesis of blue Co-aluminate (CoAl2O4) pigment by ceramic method with Co3O4ve Al2O3 raw materials, grinding of stable suspensions that were prepared with addition of 0.3 wt.% Darvan C and 1 wt.% STPP as dispersant in attrition and planetary ball mill and color properties were investigated. In the suspension containing Darvan C in planetary ball mill, higher grinding efficiency were obtained comparing to attrition milling. Blue Co-aluminate pigment was ground successfully to 230 nm after 240 min in planetary ball mill. Although, contamination of ZrO2 comes from balls and grinder, surface charge and isoelectric point of pigments were not affected. It was determined that colour shade changes from blue to turquoise blue with degreasing of particle size of pigments. However, this alteration did not affect the colour shade of pigments after firing. As a result, it was revealed that there is no negative effect of grinding proses on chemical and thermal colour stability on Co-aluminate pigments and Co-aluminate pigments have a using potential in ceramic ink-jet inks by grinding to submicron size.
