Abstract :
In this study, transesterification of canola oil with methanol has been investigated in a heterogeneous system, using CaO-dolomite catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation of dolomite with aqueous solution of CaAc. The XRD results showed that all the CaAc and CaCO3 in dolomite were transformed to CaO after calcination. The effects of CaAc loading, catalyst amount, methanol/canola oil molar ratio, and reaction time in biodiesel production were investigated. The catalyst with 7.5 wt.% CaAc loaded on dolomite gave the highest catalytic activity for this reaction. The highest FAME yield of 93.76 % was obtained under optimum conditions of 6:1 molar ratio of methanol to canola oil, catalyst amount of 3 wt.%, 67.5 ˚C reaction temperature and 3 h of reaction time.
