A VIEW ON BEKTASHISM IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19^TH CENTURY THROUGH A NOVEL: ÇERAĞLAR UYANIRKEN
Abstract :
As a literary genre, novel keeps some hints about historical facts within. Hence in a novel one can realize some historical developments or processes by the expressions of the narrator. The novel “Çerağlar Uyanırken”, which was written by A. Yılmaz Soyyer, is one of the novels of this kind. The author of the novel is also known by some academic studies on Bektashism. Thus with this background he uses his novel to make some evaluations about Bektashism. This article focuses on this novel which involves the hard times of Bektashism in the 19th century. As is known after the abolishment of Janissaries in 1826, Bektashism was also suppressed and Bektashis faced difficult situations. After a while the pressure decreased and Bektashism continued its existence under unofficial conditions. This study aims to reveal some evaluations about Bektashism in the first half of the 19th century based on this novel. In addition features about Bektashis and Bektashism as a sect are discussed. This article firstly begins with an introduction that describes the general situation of Bektashism of the time that the novel narrates about. Then reflections of the historical events to the novel are discussed. Afterwards information given about Bektashism and Bektashis in the novel is presented. Thus with the conclusion part it is aimed to explain how historical realities and processes are reflected to this novel.
