Abstract :
Sustainable construction is important for the continuation of life in a healthy world for future generations; many issues affecting the quality of life such as effective use of resources, take advantage of renewable energy, the choice of recyclable materials that do not harm the environment and water conservation are considered in the context of sustainable design. Implementations carried out in this framework are regarded as valuable due to providing the consciousness of sustainability to the society. Creating the awareness of sustainability is given a great importance by educators; thus, “education for sustainability” are included from the preschool program so that children can learn the gainings of such perspective in their early ages. In support of this concept, it is believed that education structures should be a laboratory where children can practice theoretical knowledge learned at school. In that respect, studies need to be considered in the context of sustainable construction are studied in this research. In the study, after a description of the importance of sustainable design as a learning mean, significant subjects such as using natural light, heating, cooling and air-conditioning methods, wind energy, water protection and material selection are analyzed in terms of designing sustainable schools. It is criticized worldwide that structures ground on sustainable design principles are relatively few in numbers. Despite, there is an increasing interest to the subject in Turkey later years; a lot more steps are required in terms of implementation and research of the issue. Thus, the purpose of the study is to provide a supplementary reference for school designs.
