Isolation of Salmonella spp. in cage birds in Ankara

Abstract
In this study; 271 of cage birds fecal samples, collected from several aviaries in city of Ankara, were aimed to analysis for presence of Salmonella. The classical culture method was applicated for isolation of Salmonella from the fecal samples collected. The isolates were identified in level of species by Salmonella Polyvalan “O” Antiserum and these isolates, belong to B serogroup, were detected by Salmonella Group Specific antisera. In final of the study, 1 of 182 canary feces samples (1%), 1 of 20 Indian nightingale feces samples (5%) and 1 of 5 wild finch feces samples (20%) were found positive for Salmonella. Isolation of Salmonella spp. from cage birds compose the risk for bird, breeder and environmental health. To prevent from a probably outbreak of Salmonellosis, hygiene and protection rules must be carefully taken.
