Abstract :
Objectives: We aimed to determine the ratio of malignant causes, evaluate the treatment procedures and identify the differential diagnoses of benign causes for the jaundice in the patiends with this study. Patients and Method: We retrospectively investigated laboratory tests, diagnostic methods, minimal invasive and surgical procedures carried out in 61 (22 females, 39 males) jaundiced patients who were admitted to the emergency service during 2005-2007. Results: Periampullary tumors were the principal cause of the jaundice in 47.6% of the patients. Choledocholithiasis (32.8%), metastatic liver disease (8.2%) and Klastkin tumors (4.9%) were the other causes. Malignancy was present in 37(%60.6) of the patients with a mean age of 61.9. Conclusion: Malignancy as a cause of the jaundice increased with age, in agreement with the earlier literature. However, there was still a high incidence of malignancy for the patients younger than 60 years of age. We believe that malignancies must be eliminated first with diagnostic methods no matter what the age of the jaundiced patients.
