Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the difficulties that families of gifted students face. The participants of the study are 97 parents whose children attend Adana Science and Arts Center in 2008-2009 academic year. Through open-ended questions, the parents were asked about their opinions related to the difficulties they face as families of gifted students, their views about Adana Science and Arts Center difficulties encountered in terms of attendance, as well as their expectations and suggestions for possible solutions. The data obtained from the questionaire were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings show that parents face difficulties about the issues such as their children’s questions and characteristics, communication skills, formal education, and instructional learning and teaching behaviors. As to the difficulties related to the Adana Science and Arts Center parents report that they have problems with transportation, inadequacy of equipments, attendance and difficulties related to the applications in the center. The issues regarding expectations and suggestions for solutions reported by the parents are teaching and learning process in the center, attendance, equipments, transportation, education opportunities in the direction of the students’ interests and abilities and expectations about formal education.
