Abstract :
This study was carried out to reveal the perceptions of preservice early childhood teachers’ concepts on “Science” and “Scientist” through metaphors. The study was conducted through phenomenology which was found among qualitative research designs. The data on completing the expression “Science/Scientist… is like. Because ….” was collected using 74 female, 22 male total 96 third grade university students on Early Childhood Education Department in 2013-2014 academic year, fall term, Necmettin Erbakan University. The collected data was analyzed and expounded using content analysis. According to the collected data, preservice teachers created 54 valid metaphors for “Science” and 49 valid metaphors for “Scientist” concepts. The created metaphors were categorized considering their common properties and accommodations. In the end of this process, 9 categories for “Science” concept and 7 categories for “Scientist” concept were obtained. No negative metaphor was observed on “Science” and “Scientist” concepts among the metaphors created by preservice teachers. Positive perceptions were observed on “Science” and “Scientist” but preservice teachers have traditional and unrealistic perceptions of both concepts.
