Abstract :
The aim of this study is to investigate the relations of identity styles, processes and statuses with five identity functions. The research group consisted of 208 (114 female, 94 male) university students and their ages are between 18-22 years old (mean=19.36±0.94). Identity Style Inventory, Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale, and Functions of Identity Scale were used to collect data. Results of this study indicated that identity styles and identity development processes are related to functions of identity. Results indicated that individuals in the achievement and early closure statuses reported optimal identity profile whereas individuals in the moratorium and diffusion statuses reported problematic identity profile. Results indicated that coherent and continuous sense of identity is important factor for individuals’ mental health. Results of this study indicated that specialist who worked with adolescents and emerging adulthood should be considering identity development in order to improve positive mental health characteristic.
