Development Of The Historical Thinking Skills Of Children With Museum Education in Pre-School Period
Abstract :
This study aims to develop historical thinking skills of preschool children through a planned visit to a museum and to investigate children’s historical thinking processes. In this study, qualitative research method, more specifically action research was employed when analyzing the data. The sample of the study consists of 10 kindergarten children aged 5 and 6. Data were collected using activity records in the museum, dialogues and the interview records made after the museum visit. The analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics technique based on the previously- determined themes and sub-problems. The findings of the study indicated that while describing past socio-cultural factors and explaining the functions of the instruments in the museum, the children used their pre-knowledge, presented evidence of the culture in their own life experiences, made inferences by referencing their family elders and by thinking anachronically from time to time, Also, the children perceived the concepts of change and continuity in the course of time. Finally, the use of concrete objects in the museum and receival of the support from teachers enabled them fictionalize the past life using limited skills of historical emphaty in their imagination.
