Abstract :
In the study, strain based damage limits in the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC) were experimentally investigated on column members. Two cantilever poorly confined column members were tested. Increasing cyclic lateral loads were applied to the columns under constant axial loads. Firstly, concrete and steel strain limits describing damages in the TEC transformed to column lateral top displacements. For this, the approaches (lumped plasticity, moment-curvature relationship, hinge length assumption etc.) in the TEC and principles of structural mechanical were used. Then, column damages occurred at the strain related lateral displacements were observed and the damage limits were evaluated. Any permanent damage that affects serviceability was not observed in the members subjected to Minimum damage. Some permanent damages were observed in the members subjected to Safety damage. Significant permanent damages were observed in the members subjected to Collapse damage. However, any strength degradation has not occurred in this damage limit. Consequently, strain based damage limits and related procedure in the TEC have implemented successfully damage evaluation of poorly confined columns investigated in the study.
