Abstract :
Subitizing is the rapid enumeration of quantities containing four or less objects without counting. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of conceptual subitizing training on 2nd and 3rd grade students’ numerical efficiency. The participants comprised 217 students who have been recruited from four different schools. Half of the students from each class were chosen for experimental group and the other half was assigned as control group. For each group, random dot counting test and calculation performance test were implemented as pretests. The tarining lasted for 2 hours in 2 consecutive days. Results showed a significant improvement between experimental and control group’s random dot counting post-tests and calculation performance post-test. A finer analysis showed that less successful group developed on calculation performance, but relatively successful group did not benefit at all. It was concluded that low achievers’ calculation performance can be improved through canceptual subitizing training.
