Abstract :
National anthems have become one of the symbols that represent national entity of the countries in modern period. These anthems which are recited at official ceremonies and international organizations in chorus, accompanied by a music, find place even in the Constitutions of some countries like Turkey. These lyrics express national entity and independence; unity and integrity of countries; the links between a people and their country; and the elements that bring and keep a nation together. It is obvious that these lyrics have relationships with political science through some concepts they include, such as independence, patriotism, sovereignity, common consciousness of nationhood etc. In the Introduction of this study, a brief information will be given regarding what national anthems are, how they have emerged and spread; and in the following parts, the political science concepts which have connections with those lyrics will be explained respectively, examples being given for each one from the national anthems of different countries. In determining the national anthem samples given for relevant concepts, criteria such as prominance of countries in international politics and political history, their significance for the political position of Turkey and sampling level provided by anthem lyrics of countries have been considered.
